DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The President has yet to decide on the fate of the Martial law declaration next week and the decision will be based on the recommendations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Saturday said they expect the AFP to submit their recommendation next week, after which President Rodrigo Duterte will make the decision either to ask for another extension or end it by the end of the month.
But Roque pointed out the extension of martial law in Mindanao would guarantee the safety and security of the public, particularly during the Marawi rehabilitation phase.
Roque who held a press briefing in Zamboanga City Saturday, December 2, emphasized “I have had prior consultations with the Armed Forces. The recommendation will be submitted by next week. So the President will make a decision, if not next week, then the week after,”
The Martial law declaration in Mindanao will expire on December 30, 2017 but if the government will again ask for another extension, the President should decide to allow Congress to discus the matter before they will recess for the Christmas break.
“Bagamat na-liberate na po natin ang Marawi, ang banta po ng terorismo at ng violent extremism ay nananatili (Even if we liberated Marawi already, the terrot threat and violent extremism is very much alive),” he said.
If the government so decide to extend it, Roque said it will be helpful as rehabilitation is ongoing in Marawi.-EZC/Newsline.ph
