Employer of murdered OFW Joanna Demafelis arrestedPosted on
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed reports, that the Lebanese employer of murdered Overseas Filipino Worker Joanna Demafelis, has been arrested.
Authorities in Kuwait arrested Nader Essam Assaf, the employer of Demafeliz, who stands as principal suspect behind the brutal killing of the 29-year-old OFW from Iloilo City.
However, Assaf’s wife Mona is still at-large, authorities suspect she is in Syria.
Demafeliz said found dead in a freezer in Kuwait, two weeks ago. Authorities believed her cadaver was hidden inside a freezer for over a year.
Cayetano in a statement said, President Rodrigo Duterte welcomed the arrest of Assaf.
“The President welcomes the news that Nader Essam Assaf is now in the hands of authorities in Lebanon,” Cayetano said.
Cayetano stressed “Assaf’s arrest is a critical first step in our quest for justice for Joanna and we are thankful to our friends in Kuwait and Lebanon for their assistance.”
Assaf and his wife have been the subject of a manhunt by International Police (Interpol).
The Philippine government, Cayetano said, expects Kuwait to request Assaf’s extradition “so he could stand trial in Kuwait.”
Duterte visited Demafeliz wake in Sara, Iloilo Thursday, February 22.
