CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Two police officers who responded to a hostage-taking situation here were shot in the middle of a negotiation by a handgun-wielding man along Burgos and Mabina Streets in Barangay 13 Sunday afternoon.
Police record showed Corporal Jay-ainn Bundulan and Corporal Jasin Abesamis, responded to report that a man who was later identified as Elmo Montillano, hostaged his owned widowed mother, Azucena, 84.
Senior Master Sergeant Ruben Gallur, in a phone interview said, Montillano, 56, male, single and resident of the same barangay hostaged his mother .
He said Lt. Romeo Paro, deputy station commander of the Divisoria police, tried negotiate with Montillano who was armed with .38 caliber pistol.
While the negotiation was in progress, Montillano suddenly pointed fired his him towards Bundulan and Abesamis.
Paro returned fire and hit Montillano on his firearm, Gallur said, adding that the suspect was subdued after he sustained a gunshot wound.
He said Montillano’s mother was also injured but not from a gunshot.
“The mother was bleeding from the head and some parts of her body. It was possible that she was struck with a heavy object. At the crime scene we found a fragmented plastic chair,” Gallur said.
He said Montillano family had no idea he was going to hurt his mother since prior to the incident the mother asked his son to order food through a food delivery service.
All those wounded were brought to the nearest medical facility, he added.
Gallur said they are now investigating what triggered Montillano to hostage his own mother hostage and how he got hold the handgun.
Montillano, Gallur said will be charged for frustrated murder.
