DAVAO CITY—Twenty-four drums of spilled oil were recovered from the Ising and Taba Rivers on Friday after a pipeline of a banana packing plant in Carmen, Davao del Norte leaked to the canal and flowed to the two waterways.

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) – Davao commander Lt. George Maganto said they conducted the clean-up and recovery operation after the PCG-Panabo Substation reported the oil spill on Thursday.

Maganto said the oil spill was caused by a leak on the fuel tank pipeline of the Davao Packing Corp. (Dapco).

He said the recovery efforts and clean-up operation in the two rivers were carried out with the cooperation and voluntarism of some local officials and people residing near the Ising and Taba rivers.

The residents, according to Maganto, have already blocked the oil using banana trunks and manually collected the spilled oil from the rivers before the PCG arrived in the area.

Some 8,000 liters of oil were reportedly spilled because of the leak and the 24 drums of recovered oil were equivalent to 4,600 liters.

Maganto said they could not give a time frame yet on when to finish the recovery and clean-up operation, but assured they will complete the job before the spill reaches the shore. (With reports from PNA)
