DAVAO CITY — Some 564 farmers from the four towns of Davao Oriental whose swine farms were affected by the African Swine Fever received payment P5,000 each as indemnification fee for their culled swine.

The Department of Agriculture paid the farmers, which represented the second batch of beneficiaries are from the municipalities of Boston, Cateel, Manay, and Baganga received the “indemnification” during the pay-out held on October 27-30, 2021.

For each swine surrendered for culling, the DA paid P5,000.00 to compensate their losses.

Authorities have implemented culling of swine to control and prevent the further spread of the disease to other farms. The government provided the funds for indemnification to encourage farmers in affected zones to surrender their swine for depopulation.

To prevent the further spreading of the disease, Gov. Nelson Dayanghirang issued Executive Order No. 23 last October 22, 2021, to adopt and implement the Bantay ASF sa Barangay program.

The E.O. prescribed the implementing guidelines for the Bantay ASF Program and the Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Repopulation Assistance Program for the ASF-affected and Non-ASF- affected Barangays and Municipalities within the Province of Davao Oriental. The E.O. will hasten the recovery of the swine industry in the province by providing guidelines on calibrated repopulation of swine for farmers to raise pigs again and recover their lost livelihood due to ASF.
