DAVAO CITY (November 7)-  The local government units in Southern region of Mindanao are seeking the consensus from residents on the possible extension of martial law in Mindanao after December 31.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff, Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., said that most of the residents from the areas in Mindanao are supportive of the extension, especially in areas perceived to be poorly run by their LGUs.

Business groups also welcome the extension of Martial law in Mindanao as they believe that ensuring peace and security is vital in their business operation.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)  has earlier supported the year-long extension of martial law in Mindanao, saying it is instrumental in “bringing closure” to the terrorist uprising in the region.

The military has cited persistent security threats from extremists and communist rebels as major factors in the possible extension of Martial Law in Mindanao, which has been in force since May 2017.

Local Government Sec.  Eduardo Año says he is in favor of extending martial law in Mindanao beyond December 31.  “Nakita naman natin na walang abuses na ginagawa ang mga military at police,” he said.  “For the lawless elements, private armed groups, for the terrorists, takot na takot sila sa martial law.”

The government has yet to come up with an official position on whether to lift or extend martial law in Mindanao by the end of December 31, 2018- Jiann Padillo/ NewsLine
