ILIGAN CITY —– Eve of this year’s Mothers Day celebration, a 55-year old son and his partner mauled his 88-year old mother because they are reportedly fed up taking care of her. The two now languish in jail in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

Kauswagan police chief Captain Eric Logronio said Romeo Asuelo and Luz Escoto are now detained and will face parricide cases after mauling his 88-year old mother.

Logronio identified the victim as Ignacio Asuelo, 88 who is suffering from dementia.

The neighbor reported to the police that a senior citizen was maltreated by her own son and his live-in partner.

According to Logronio, the neighbor told the police “The last time she saw Romero hit his mother with “kabo” (water dipper)”.

Based on the narrative of the neighbor, Logronio said the couple always maul the victim because she defecates anywhere and would not understand simple instruction.

“Gi-ango ango na daw ingon sila (she has dementia, they said),” Logronio said.

Medical results indicated the senior citizen sustained injuries and several bruises all over her body. She is now under the care of her niece in Lugait, Misamis Oriental.

The niece is the main complainant of the parricide case.

“A witness said the couple was heard several times saying they wanted the senior citizen to die so that they can get the 50,000 pesos insurance of a cooperative in Lugait,” Logronio said.-Divina M. Suson
