Samal Island fisherfolks welcome bridge project

DAVAO CITY — Fisherfolks of ISland Garden City of Samal warmly Malipayon nga gidaweat sa usa ka mangingisda sa Samal ang pagtukod sa Samal Island Davao City Connector Bridge kay matud nila dakung tabang kin isa ilang pamilya og mas modaghan ang Si-Si nga ilang makuha gikan sa mga poste sa tulay nga itukod.

“The bridge construction is not a threat to us, I am so happy watching that bridge being constructed,” says Roy Laput, 57, a fisherman and a father of three.

The government and the contractor are responsible people “I know they will not throw their waste to the ocea,” Laput explained.

He further emphasized “The bridge will be constructed in a specific period while the international vessel disturbs the ocean every minute, they emit sludge and waste to the sea which is more dangerous.”

While many welcome the construction of the long-awaited bridge, thwo families namely the Lucas and the Rodriguez family are up in arms agains the bridge alignment because it involve their properties.but they say they are not against the bridge but are opposing the alignment.

The families invoke the Writ of Kalikasan and the environmental protection in the opposition.

Rene Sobremesana, a security guard spends at least P42,430 a year to crosss the Samal-Davao for work daily while the rich can just skid off with their jetski’s or motorboat to cross Davao shores and vice-versa.

Both Laput and Sobremesana said the bridge brings more than economic relief to them not just comfort.-Editha Z. Caduaya
