DAVAO CITY – The members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of the Province of Davao de Oro expressed their condolences for the passing away of lawyer Jose “JoeCab” Caballero, the first elected governor of the province.

Caballero, the erstwhile governor of Compostela Valley – now Davao de Oro – province, died on Friday, March 31 at the age of 73.

“On behalf of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Davao de Oro, we join the people of Davao de Oro in mourning the passing of Atty. Jose “JoeCab” Caballero, the first elected governor of Davao de Oro, then Compostela Valley, who served us from 1998-2007,” said Vice Governor Jayvee Tyron Lim Uy in a statement.

“Gov. JoeCab was the leader who nurtured our province in its early days. He was a witness to the trials that the province went through – a from ensuring that there was a bureaucracy to keep the government going and to trying to have its own home to shelter the provincial government – the Provincial Capitol,” Uy said in the Cebuano vernacular.

Uy said Caballero was known for his good governance.

“He (Caballero) earned the province its first Galing Pook award for his trailblazing women empowerment program. He was widely credited for programs on agriculture and livelihood development, educational scholarship for the poor but deserving students, infrastructures and many others,” Uy added.

“We extend our condolences to his family most especially to our colleague in the Sanggunian – Board Member Kris Caballero and all of Atty JoeCab’s loved ones. We are with you in this time of grief,” Uy further said.
