Samal Island upgrades government standards

DAVAO CITY — The keep the glory and have more accolade. the Local Government Unit of the Island Garden City of Samal continues to upgrade its standards in governance.

The assessment team for the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) team visited Samal on July 17, for the highly anticipated 2023 Regional Assessment in the Province of Davao del Norte at Camp Holiday Resort, Kinawitnon, Babak District.

The 2023 regional assessors evaluate the city’s 2022 performance with a rigorous assessment process on budget utilization compliance with upgraded SGLG criteria, which the LGU Samal has been on a quest to comply with. Furthermore, department heads defended and explained the core and essential areas in their compiled documents during the assessment. While some offices/areas passed with flying colors.

It was assessed and evaluated for its performance level based on the SGLG criteria in core and essential areas such as financial management, environmental management, disaster preparedness, social protection and sensitivity, safety, peace, and order, sustainable education, youth development, health compliance and responsibilities, business friendliness, and competitiveness.

Under the administration of Mayor Al David T. Uy, the local government unit of the Island Garden City of Samal has always emerged as one of the finalist for outstanding cities and municipalities qualified for the SGLG.

“Ang indicators karon nag kalisod, upgraded na. Naghatag kini og continuing challenge sa local government, sa mga liders, labi napud sa mga department heads. Because our performance will also be assessed and evaluated kung unsa atong gina himo as basic service provider. No one will take good care of Samalenyos, only Samalenyos,”Nieljun C. Esdrelon, City Administrator said.

Mayor Uy stated in his message that he hopes to meet all of the criteria. He sees SGLG as a progressive assessment that must be completed as part of the improvement process.

The Regional Assessment team from Davao de Oro led by LGOO Vl Evan Noel Pascua-MLGOO of the Municipality of Nabunturan; LGOO Vl Kim G. Pedro, MGLOO of Municipality of Monkayo; LGOO Vl Cherry H. Leybag, MLGOO of the Mawab; LGOO Vl Jane Mardi C. Melendres; LGOO Vl Nerica Dia Marie B. Franco; LGOO Vl Keith Mikel T. Tanveco along with DILG Provincial Director Jonathan Leybag. The SGLG team was split into two groups, one for document evaluation and the other for site evaluation.

The DILG CLGOO, Jacqueline C. Estrada, together with the City Budget, headed by Ms. Jemelita Q. Camaso, as the SGLG focal person, hosted the SGLG CY2023 regional assessment exit conference. The assessment was also attended by Civil Society organizations.PR
