Perangat festival: 10 groups showcase vibrant ritual dance competition in Misamis Occidental

November 13, 2023 by NewsLine Philippines

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – In an exuberant celebration of culture and tradition, the Mopac Grounds in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental, came alive on Saturday evening, November 11, for the second-year festivities of the Perangat Festival, marking the 94th anniversary of the province.

The term “Perangat” is a Subanen word that translates to “progress,” echoing the vision of Governor Henry Oaminal for Misamisnon to live harmoniously, prosperously, and joyfully.

In response to the warm reception of the community, various law enforcement agencies worked diligently to ensure the robust security of the event.

The location buzzed with excitement as thousands of spectators witnessed the Ritual Dance Competition, where ten groups from different municipalities and cities in Misamis Occidental vied for the top honors.

Each participating group, comprised of students and out-of-school youth, showcased the vibrant culture and traditions of the Subanen tribe, the province’s original settlers.

Participants passionately brought to life the rich heritage and expressed gratitude for the abundance of the harvest and the flourishing of Misamis Occidental.

Despite the sweltering weather during their performances, participants persevered. In cases of exhaustion, they were promptly assisted by the standby responders, the Security and Safety Team, and volunteers led by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

The activity, which lasted for almost four hours, concluded with the announcement of winners:

Grand Champion:
The delegation from the municipalities of Calamba and Balingao claimed the top spot, securing PHP 500,000.00 in cash and a 5-million-peso tourism project. They also received awards for Best in Musicality, Best in Storyline, and Best in Costume.

First Runner-Up:
Oroquieta City earned the first runner-up position, receiving PHP 300,000.00 in cash and an additional 3-million-peso tourism project.

Second Runner-Up:
The performers from Don Victoriano municipality took the second runner-up position and the Best in Performance award, earning PHP 200,000.00 in cash and a 2-million-peso tourism project.

Consolation Prize for Best in Choreography:
Tangub City, acknowledged for Best in Choreography, received a consolation prize of PHP 100,000.00 in cash.

The event was attended by provincial and local government officials, making it a significant occasion in the province.

The Perangat Festival, despite facing challenges to disrupt the province’s peace and order, proved to be a resounding success due to the unity and cooperation of the Misamisnons.
