Flooding prompts 295 families in Davao de Oro to evacuate

DAVAO CITY — Some 295 families have evacuated in Davao de Oro early morning today due to flooding brought about by Shear Line in Davao region which also prompting local government units to declare suspension of classes in all levels while government employees were advised to work from home if neecssary. .

The provincial governments of Davao de Oro and Davao del Norte have declared class, work suspensions early today January 16, due to continuous rains and other towns have declared preemptive evacuations as shear line hit the region.

The city government of Davao has earlier declared the suspension of classes in all levels while government employees are encouraged to work from home but the private establishments have their own discretion.

While the local government of Cateel, Lupon and Baganga in Davao Oriental have declared suspension of classes.

In Davao Occidental, the municipality of Sta. Maria also declared class and office work suspensions.

The Office of Civil Defense XI spokesperson Franz Irag in an interview with Newsline said, they are continuously monitor the effects of the Shear Line and movement of the weather.

At 12:35am, January 16, 2024, flooding incidents occurred in some Barangays of Mawab, Nabunturan and landslide incidents along national roads in Maragusan, Davao de Oro due to continuous moderate to heavy rains caused by the effects of shear line in the region; no reported casualties as of this report.

Davao de Oro especially the municipalities of Maragusan, New Bataan, Compostela and Monkayo are situated near the tributary rivers connecting Agusan River which is geographically located near the rivers of Montevista and Nabunturan towns.

While Davao City especially Talomo areas are locate dnear the Talomo River which connected to Davao del Norte River situated in Barangay Lasang.

Irag emphasized, the concerned LGU’s and his agency have prepositioned the relief goods for disaster operations which include noodles, rice and canned goods.

All health and disaster personnel are on alert.

The Agusan and Davao del Norte forest have been denuded decades ago due to massive illegal logging activities.
