477 aspiring lawyers fail to take the bar exams

November 27, 2017 by NewsLine Philippines Leave a Comment

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Close to 500 aspiring lawyers failed to show up and take the bar examinations  during the country’s 116th bar examination, the Supreme Court said Sunday, November 26, 2017.

The Office of the Bar Confidant (OBC) records showed  out of the 7,227 candidates, which is higher compared to last year’s 6,831, only 6,354 finished the first of the four Sundays of the bar exam.

The Supreme Court Information Office in a twit stated “Statistics: 7,227 were admitted to take the bar; after first Sunday, only 6,759 remained; as of third Sunday leading into today’s last two exams, there are now only 6,750 examinees.”

Former Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Davao City  Chapter president Ramon Edison Batacan,  a professor for Mercantile and Civil Law at the Ateneo de Davao University said everyone who went out of the University of Santo Tomas gate was happy as the four-Sunday examination ended.

Batacan, now serving as the first College of Law Dean for the Rizal Memorial Colleges Law Department  was in Manila to inspire and to  give morale support to his Ateneo students, described the post bar exam atmosphere “It was festive last sunday, the examinations for  remedial law was fair according to the AdDU examinees.”

The Bar exam covers eight subjects namely Political Law, Civil Law, Taxation, Labor Law, Criminal Law, Remedial Law, Mercantile Law and Legal and Judicial Ethics.

Exams were held on four Sundays of  November starting November 5, 12, 19, and 26 at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) in Manila.

The conduct of the bar examinations is under the auspices of the Supreme Court. Justice Lucas P. Bersamin chaired this year’s bar examinations.

It is a common practice that professors from different law schools and universities provide morale support to their students during the bar examinations.-Editha Z. Caduaya/Newsline.ph
