DAVAO CITY — Starting on Wednesday, March 20, Mount Apo will be closed.

This was the announcement of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)>

In an advisory, the DENR stated that the ongoing El Niño prompted the agency to “Temporary suspension of all trekking activities” from March 20 to March 30, 2024, pursuant to MANP-Protected Area Management Board Executive Committee Resolution No. 1, series of 2024 enacted today, March 19, 2024.”

“In light of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which has led to a prolonged dry spell affecting the trekking and camping sites within Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP), we must prioritize the safety of our environment and visitors. Consequently,” the statement added.

The measure, the DENR said is a precautionary measure which is essential to mitigate the risk of bushfires and ensure the well-being of the park’s diverse ecosystems. The decision to resume activities will be carefully considered based on the assessments and recommendations provided by the MANP Protected Area Management Office of both Region XI and Region XII.

For adventurers who have made reservations during the affected dates, the agency advised them to reach out to your respective local organizers to arrange alternative schedules for your excursions.

“We deeply appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this environmental challenge. Together, let’s continue our collective efforts to safeguard and cherish the natural beauty of Mt. Apo Natural Park,” it added.
