Strip creator and veteran director Carlo J. Caparas dies at 80

DAVAO CITY —– Carlo J. Caparas, a distinguished Filipino writer, director, and National Artist, passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on March 12, 1944, Caparas left an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his remarkable storytelling and unparalleled creativity.

Carlo J. Caparas is best known for his iconic films such as “Camp Cawa-Cawa Siege,” “Ang Panday,” and “Pieta.” His works not only captivated audiences but also highlighted the rich cultural heritage and struggles of the Filipino people. Through his visionary direction and compelling narratives, Caparas became a pillar of the Philippine film industry.

In recognition of his immense contributions, Carlo J. Caparas was honored with the prestigious National Artist award, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in Filipino cinema.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna Villa, who passed away in 2017. Together, they were a formidable team, both in life and in their creative pursuits. Carlo is survived by his three loving children, who continue to cherish his memory and uphold his artistic legacy.
