DAVAO CITY, Philippines—A police officer rescued a trapped green sea turtle and returned it to the shorelines of Barangay Poblacion, Tawi-Tawi Island, on Monday, June 3.

The Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police shared photos on their social media account of Patrolman Mariben P. Khan from the PNP-MG 1st Maritime Special Operations Unit of Taganak, MSBC, pushing the turtle back to the sea.

The green sea turtle was found entangled in debris along the shoreline. Khan’s actions highlight the importance of protecting endangered species like the green sea turtle, which faces threats from environmental hazards and human activities.

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are listed as endangered due to factors such as habitat loss, illegal trade, and bycatch in fishing gear. They play a vital role in marine ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds, which are crucial for other marine life. Conservation efforts worldwide, including those in the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, focus on protecting nesting sites and reducing bycatch through community involvement and stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws *Wikipedea).

The Turtle Islands are known for their significant populations of nesting green sea turtles.
