DAVAO CITY, Philippines – City Mayor Sebastian ‘Baste’ Duterte has openly expressed disappointment over Senator Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go’s perceived detachment from issues affecting the people of Davao.
During an interview on the SMNI’s “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” Facebook page, the mayor candidly shared his thoughts on Go’s seeming lack of involvement.
“You are an elected official, you are supposed to voice out about the people’s needs and wants. He is in a high position, mas mataas, but you know, like I said, he has time to redeem himself. All of you know kung ano yung nangyari (what happened),” Mayor Duterte remarked, hinting at past events that may have led to this situation.
Mayor Duterte, visibly frustrated, further elaborated, “Kung gusto niya pang tumakbo na senador ulit, he should show that he is one with the Davaoeños, especially in times like this.” He emphasized that Go needs to demonstrate solidarity with his constituents if he hopes to maintain their support in future elections.
When asked if Senator Go had distanced himself from the Duterte political camp, Mayor Duterte responded, “Could be. You know politics – you can never guess what happens next. Because Bong is a Davaoeño, or so he claims di ba? I voted for him, so this isn’t just about him being the former chief-of-staff of the former president. I am speaking as a voter.”
Go has long been associated with former President Rodrigo Duterte, serving as his assistant and later as a key figure during Duterte’s presidency. His rise to prominence is widely attributed to the unwavering support of the Duterte family and their political machinery. However, his recent actions have sparked questions about his loyalty and commitment to his Davaoeño roots.
Notably, Senator Go has been absent from public events alongside the Dutertes in recent months.
This absence has fueled speculation about a possible rift. Reports suggest that Go is treading cautiously as he has lost several privileges previously enjoyed during the Duterte administration. Additionally, his flagship initiative, the Malasakit Center, is reportedly facing financial challenges under the current administration.
The senator has consistently expressed gratitude to former President Duterte for his support over the years. However, the current distance between him and the Duterte camp has raised concerns about his political stance and future engagements.
Mayor Baste Duterte’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment among some Davaoeños who feel that Go’s recent actions do not align with the interests and needs of their community.
