DAVAO CITY, Philippines –— The Land Transportation Office XI Regional Director Eleanor Calderon reiterated on Wednesday that no one is legally allowed to drive a vehicle not registered in their office.
Driving an unregistered vehicle is against Republic Act 11659, which mandates that all vehicles plying the road must be registered with the LTO.
Operating illegal vehicles is punishable by imprisonment of up to six years and a fine of up to P2 million.
President Ferdinand Marcos previously ordered the LTO to strengthen its efforts against illegal vehicles.
Often, vehicles that run away and are caught without registration will be taken by the LTO and kept in their custody until the owner pays the fine and the unit is registered.
Calderon called on car owners to take care of the registration of their units to avoid being caught, paying fines, and going to jail.
