PNP Chief orders reopening of Barayuga murder case

October 2, 2024 by Editha Z. Caduaya

DAVAO CITY —Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, has ordered the immediate reopening of the murder investigation into the 2019 killing of retired police general and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga. This decision comes in light of new testimony that implicates high-ranking officials in the case.

During a House Quad Committee hearing on September 27, Police Lieutenant Colonel Santie Mendoza revealed that he had been directed by National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo and former PCSO General Manager Royina Garma to conduct an operation against Barayuga.

Mendoza alleged that Leonardo and Garma orchestrated the murder, claiming that Garma provided intelligence for the operation, which she asserted was related to a high-value individual involved in illegal drug activities.

In response to these serious allegations, Marbil emphasized the necessity for a thorough reinvestigation. “This revelation demands a full investigation into the murder. No one is above the law, and we will seek justice for Ret. Gen. Wesley Barayuga and his family with the full resources of the PNP,” he stated.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has been assigned to lead the reinvestigation. General Marbil indicated that the CIDG will reevaluate all existing evidence in light of the new testimony and collaborate closely with other relevant agencies to ensure that the investigation is comprehensive, impartial, and transparent.

“We are committed to uncovering the truth, regardless of the position or power of those involved. The public can rest assured that we will hold those responsible accountable,” Marbil affirmed.

The reopening of the Barayuga case represents a significant development in the PNP’s efforts to resolve high-profile investigations, particularly those involving public officials.

Marbil reiterated the PNP’s dedication to upholding the law and maintaining the integrity of the police force, assuring that all investigations will be pursued without fear or favor.

The Barayuga murder case, which has remained unresolved since 2019, is now under renewed scrutiny. The CIDG’s reinvestigation will revisit previous inquiries and pursue new leads to uncover any additional evidence related to the case.
