Six arrested in spider derby

DAVAO CITY – Six individuals were arrested by police on Saturday afternoon, October 26, 2024, for participating in a spider derby in Purok 21, Small Village, Barangay Mintal, Tugbok District, Davao City.

The arrested individuals were identified as Jett, 29, a driver; Reny, 34, a laborer; Irvin, 52; Ernie, 46, a laborer; Jun-Jun, 40, a vendor; and Giorrey, 43, a teller at STL. All are residents of Bankerohan, Davao City.

According to the police report, the suspects were caught fleeing the scene during a covert patrol while engaged in a card game for money. Their arrest is part of the police’s intensified campaign against illegal gambling.

Police confiscated evidence that included three improvised containers with seven spiders , 1,300 pesos in cash, a bamboo stick, and an improvised table.

The suspects may face charges for violating Presidential Decree 1602, which prescribes stiffer penalties for illegal gambling.
