DAVAO CITY — In a proactive measure to ensure the safety of passengers during the upcoming All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day celebrations on November 1 and 2, a surprise drug test was conducted on Wednesday morning at the Davao Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT).
The move aims to ensure that bus drivers and conductors are fit for duty and free from the influence of illegal drugs.
As the terminals are expected to experience a significant influx of passengers returning to their respective provinces, the operation emphasizes the importance of having sober drivers on the road.
“Our goal is to ensure that no driver operates a bus while under the influence of illegal substances,” said a representative from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) involved in the operation.
The surprise drug test is part of Oplan Bantay-Byahe Undas 2024, also known as Oplan Harabas, which is led by personnel from the LTO XI Law Enforcement Section in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA XI) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) XI. This comprehensive operation is designed to prevent potential accidents caused by impaired driving, whether due to illegal drugs or alcohol.
In addition to the tests at DCOTT, random drug testing was also conducted at other public terminals across the Davao region. Reports indicate that approximately 400 drivers were subjected to testing, with 150 from DCOTT, 150 from the Tagum City Overland Transport Terminal, and 100 from the Digos City Overland Transport Terminal.
Drivers who test positive will be required to undergo a confirmatory drug test to verify the initial results. This initiative underscores the commitment of local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers during this busy travel period.
