Marcos approves DOST program to boost agriculture with locally-made machinery

DAVAO CITY — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has approved a new program from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) aimed at strengthening the Philippine agriculture sector through the development and deployment of locally-manufactured agricultural machinery.

During a sectoral meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday, Marcos expressed confidence that the initiative would receive full support from the Department of Agriculture (DA). “Locally-produced machinery is more affordable than imported options,” he noted. “We’re at a point where we can make these machines cheaper, so now we have to scale up production.”

The President referenced previous government support for farm mechanization, noting that the distribution of locally-produced towed machines for harvesting and tilling has already yielded promising results.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. presented the program, titled “Local Manufacturing Capabilities to Support Agri-Mechanization,” emphasizing its potential to enhance both the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. He explained that shifting from imported to locally-produced machinery could significantly benefit farmers, strengthen local manufacturing, and create more jobs.

“Mechanization is essential to increasing efficiency and reducing costs in farming,” Solidum said, highlighting that the DA has long recognized the need for mechanization, particularly through programs like the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund, which provides farm equipment to farmers and cooperatives.

“With limited resources, supporting homegrown agri-machinery can lead to more efficient farming practices, increased productivity, and more employment opportunities,” Solidum added.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. also voiced support for the program but underscored the need to prioritize specific types of machinery and maintain high quality standards.

In response, President Marcos directed the DOST, DA, and relevant research institutions to focus on research and development aspects of agri-mechanization and ensure the program’s smooth and effective implementation. The initiative marks a significant step towards reducing the agricultural sector’s reliance on imported machinery while enhancing productivity and sustainability in Philippine farming.
