87 Baby turtles released in Dilopog City

January 6, 2025 by Althea Beatrice Caduaya Felizarta

DILOPOG CITY – A total of 87 baby sea turtles (hatchlings) were successfully released into the ocean on January 5, marking another step forward in the city’s ongoing efforts to protect marine wildlife and preserve its rich biodiversity.

The initiative, led by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), took place at the Surf, Splash, and Sea Turtle Beaches, a known nesting ground for sea turtles in the area. The event was attended by local residents, environmental advocates, and members of the fisherfolk community.

CENRO expressed its gratitude to the fishermen and residents who played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the baby turtles. Their vigilance in monitoring the nesting sites and their commitment to the coordinated release of the hatchlings were key to the program’s success.

“We deeply appreciate the community’s efforts to safeguard these baby turtles and help them safely reach the sea. This is a collective victory for marine conservation,” a CENRO representative said during the event.

Sea turtles play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. As they graze on seagrass and regulate jellyfish populations, they contribute to the balance and productivity of coastal and underwater habitats. Protecting their nesting grounds and ensuring the safe release of hatchlings are critical steps in preserving these endangered species.

The release of the hatchlings underscores the importance of environmental protection, particularly in coastal areas where human activities can disrupt marine life. CENRO called on residents and stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives aimed at conserving wildlife and protecting natural habitats.

“This event is a reminder of the need to safeguard our environment not just for the turtles but for future generations. When we protect marine life, we protect ourselves and our planet,” the CENRO spokesperson added.

The release of baby turtles is part of a larger program by the local government to protect endangered species and promote sustainable environmental practices. Educational campaigns and partnerships with local communities are ongoing to raise awareness about marine conservation and reduce threats such as plastic pollution, illegal fishing, and habitat destruction.

As the hatchlings embarked on their perilous journey into the open sea, the event left a lasting message: every individual and every community has a role to play in ensuring the survival of Earth’s delicate ecosystems.

Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate in future conservation activities and to remain vigilant in protecting the natural beauty and biodiversity of Dilopog City.
