Ateneo community commemorates 39th EDSA anniversary as PNP ensures peaceful observance nationwide

DAVAO CITY —Various campuses of the Ateneo Communities commemorated the  39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 25, 2025, nationwide with peaceful gatherings, solemn tributes, and a strong call for democracy, justice, and press freedom.

In Davao City, the Ateneo community held a candle-lighting ceremony at the university grounds, symbolizing solidarity for freedom, justice, and peace. The event honored the spirit of People Power, emphasizing its enduring significance in defending democracy.

The commemoration also recognized the role of alternative media, particularly the Mosquito Press, during martial law, when mainstream media was heavily censored. These small, independent publications courageously exposed injustices and human rights violations, ensuring the Filipino people remained informed despite government repression.

“The fight for freedom, justice, and truth is not just history—it is a responsibility we must uphold for generations to come,” a university representative said.

Although the day was not declared a holiday, the event served as a reminder that democracy requires continuous vigilance to protect civil liberties.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) successfully implemented a peaceful and orderly commemoration of the EDSA anniversary, deploying 51,172 police officers across the country to maintain security.

In Metro Manila, 8,747 police personnel were stationed in key areas, while regional police offices closely monitored activities to prevent security threats.

PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil commended the police force’s efforts in maintaining peace and order throughout the day’s observances.

“The PNP remains steadfast in preserving peace and order on this important national occasion. The peaceful conduct of today’s activities is a testament to our dedication to public security and the democratic principles of our Constitution,” PGen Marbil said.

While some protest actions were monitored, they concluded peacefully and without incidents, reinforcing the calm and orderly nature of the commemoration.

At the close of the event, PGen Marbil reaffirmed the PNP’s commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring public safety.

“It is our duty to ensure that every national celebration is safe and respectful of our history and democracy. We will continue to strengthen public trust and enforce the law for the peace of our country,” he added.

The PNP vowed to remain vigilant nationwide in support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision of maintaining peace, unity, and national development while upholding history lessons.

A Call to Remember and Uphold Democracy

The joint efforts of the PNP and various communities, including the Ateneo gathering, highlighted a shared commitment to remembering the People Power Revolution—not just as a historical event but as an ongoing responsibility to defend democracy and human rights.
