Notre Dame University condemns killing of professor, Calls for justice

February 26, 2025 by Jerick Wee

DAVAO CITY – The Notre Dame University (NDU) community has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Engineer Israel Angas, a faculty member of the College of Engineering and Computer Studies, who was ambushed and shot dead in broad daylight on February 25, 2025, in Cotabato City.

According to initial police reports, Engr. Angas was driving his white Toyota Fortuner in the Nayon Sharif area of Barangay Rosary Heights 3 when armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. The attack instantly killed the professor, while the assailants immediately fled the scene in the opposite direction.

Authorities have launched an in-depth investigation into the killing and the recent surge in shooting incidents in Cotabato City, aiming to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Notre Dame University Demands Justice

In an official statement, the NDU administration expressed profound grief, shock, and outrage over the senseless killing of Engr. Angas calls it a grievous loss to both the academic community and society.

“This heinous act of violence is not only a grievous loss to our academic community but also an affront to the sanctity of life and the values of humanity we hold dear,” the statement read.

The university described Engr. Angas as a dedicated educator, mentor, and inspiration to his students and colleagues. His tragic death, they said, highlights the fragility of peace and security in a society where even those committed to educating and shaping young minds are not spared from mindless brutality.

“We condemn this ungodly act in the strongest possible terms. It is an insult to the Divine Almighty, the source of all life, and a violation of the dignity and humanity we all share,” NDU stated.

Call for Swift Action and Accountability

The NDU administration urged law enforcement authorities to act swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent this case from becoming another unresolved incident of violence in the region.

“Let this not become another unresolved case in the growing list of senseless violence in our country. We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. Only through collective action can we ensure that justice is served and that such atrocities are prevented in the future.”

The university also extended its deepest sympathies to Engr. Angas’s family, friends, and students vowed to honor his memory by continuing his education, peace, and inspiration legacy.

“Engr. Isra’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his students and profession will forever be remembered. Let us honor his memory by continuing his legacy of nurturing knowledge, fostering peace, and inspiring future generations.”

As investigations continue, the NDU community, colleagues, and students are calling for justice and stronger measures to ensure the safety of educators and citizens alike in Cotabato City.
