QUEZON CITY—The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) convened its first inter-agency meeting of the year to discuss frameworks for safeguarding journalists during the upcoming May 2025 local and national elections. The meeting brought together government officials and media representatives to reinforce protective measures for the working press.
Mindanao Tops Media Killing Statistics
During the meeting, Justice Undersecretary Dennis Andres provided updates on cases involving journalist killings and threats since 1986. His report revealed that Mindanao remains the most dangerous region for journalists, accounting for 104 out of the 203 recorded media killings—a significant portion of which occurred during the Maguindanao Massacre.
Despite these historical figures, Andres reported a positive development: “Zero journalist killings in 2024.”
However, he acknowledged that the Philippines remains ranked 138 globally in the list of countries with journalist killings.
Government’s Role in Press Protection
The first inter-agency meeting for 2025, held at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) conference hall, underscored the government’s commitment to media safety.
Andres highlighted Department Circular No. 20, which outlines strategies for case build-ups in incidents involving journalists.
Meanwhile, Undersecretary Joel Torres Jr. stressed the importance of a stronger government and media partnership, particularly in an election year.
“We need to work together, especially now that the elections are coming, to ensure that every piece of information is verified,” Torres said.
He further emphasized that any threat, attack, or harassment against journalists during the election period is considered an election offense, reinforcing the urgency of media protection.
With election season approaching, the PTFoMS and partner agencies vowed to intensify efforts to secure a safe working environment for journalists and ensure that press freedom and democracy remain protected.
