Filipinos arrested in Qatar for unauthorized political demonstrations

DAVAO CITY — Several Filipino nationals were arrested and detained early today, March 28, 2025, in Doha, Qatar, for participating in unauthorized political demonstrations.

The Philippine Embassy in Qatar confirmed the arrests in a press statement: “The Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Doha is aware that several Filipino nationals have been arrested and detained early today, 28 March 2025, for suspected unauthorized political demonstrations in Qatar.”

The Embassy has assured that it is in contact with local authorities to provide the necessary consular assistance to the detained individuals.

In light of the incident, the Embassy reiterated its advisory on March 13, 2025, urging all Filipino nationals in Qatar to respect local laws and customs, especially concerning mass demonstrations and expressions of political grievances. The Embassy emphasized that Qatar’s legal and cultural framework prohibits unauthorized public protests, and violators may face legal consequences.

The Philippine government has yet to release further details about the identities or the circumstances surrounding the detained individuals. The Embassy assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide assistance to the affected nationals.
