DAVAO CITY (May 30) – A military court has acquitted General Jesus Durante III in connection with the high-profile murder case of businesswoman Yvonne Chua, marking the end of what his legal counsel described as a “harrowing chapter” in the officer’s life.

The decision was rendered on May 28.

Veteran defense lawyer Ramon Edison Batacan, counsel for Durante, told Newsline Philippines that his client is “deeply relieved” by the court’s ruling, which officially affirmed his innocence and cleared him of any involvement in the killing.

“While the result is consistent with what the defense has always maintained, it is still difficult to accept the two years of unjust confinement and the burden of a prolonged legal battle,” Batacan said.

Durante’s legal ordeal, according to his camp, was marked by personal and professional losses, including time away from his family, his military duties, and his broader role in society. “Despite the toll it took, he remained firm in his faith in the justice system,” Batacan added.

“He understands that no system is perfect, but believes that the principles of due process and fairness ultimately prevailed.” Now free, General Durante is expected to return to his duties with renewed commitment.

“This experience has only deepened his resolve to serve with integrity and to uphold the values of justice, transparency, and public trust,” Batacan said. “Rather than dwell on the past, he is focused on rebuilding his life, giving back to the community, and honoring the confidence others have placed in him.”

The military court’s ruling is seen as a significant development in a case that drew national attention, following the brutal slaying of Chua in Davao City in 2023.
