LUPON, DAVAO ORIENTAL (August 13)—A land dispute is believed to be the motive behind the fatal shooting of Barangay Calapagan councilor Joel Lumikid in Lupon, Davao Oriental, on the night of August 11, 2025.

According to reports, Lumikid was feeding his pigs at Purok Quarry Fortune, Barangay Calapagan, when an unidentified armed assailant approached and shot him multiple times. He was declared dead on arrival at the Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital.

Authorities recovered spent shells believed to be from a .45 caliber pistol. The Davao Oriental Provincial Forensic Unit conducted a paraffin test on the victim, but the family declined an autopsy.

Police are conducting a hot pursuit operation to identify the mastermind and determine the true motive. Barangay Calapagan officials condemned the killing, with Barangay Captain Jesus “Jing” Manila vowing to seek justice. The barangay council is considering offering a reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Barangay Captain Manila also urged the gunman to surrender to ensure justice for the victim’s family.
