MANILA (August 14) – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12232, moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) from December 2025 to November 2026 and setting the term of village and youth officials at four years.

The law limits barangay officials to three consecutive terms in the same post and SK officials to one term. The next BSKE will be on the first Monday of November 2026 and every four years thereafter, with winners assuming office on December 1.

Incumbents will remain in a hold-over capacity unless removed or suspended, but those on their third consecutive term cannot run in 2026. The Commission on Elections must release implementing rules within 90 days of the law’s effectivity.

Marcos earlier backed the postponement, citing the government’s focus on the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro region. The last BSKE was held on October 30, 2023.
