DAVAO CITY (August 25) – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the 1,340-meter Bucana Bridge Project over the Davao River is 94% complete and on track to open to motorists by the last quarter of 2025.

In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain confirmed that the bridge’s superstructure has been completed, with only minor works remaining—such as the installation of traffic barriers, pedestrian railings, final painting of the 19.5-meter pylons, and deck waterproofing ahead of asphalt overlay. Construction of the approach roads, including soil compaction, drainage, fencing, and guardrail installation, is also underway.

Part of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road, the Bucana Bridge will connect the eastern and western coastal areas separated by the Davao River. Once operational, it is expected to ease traffic congestion in downtown Davao by providing a faster and safer route between Barangays 76-A Bucana and Matina Aplaya.

Funded under the ₱3.126-billion China Aid Grant program, the bridge is a flagship DPWH project through the Unified Project Management Office – Bridges Management Cluster (UPMO-BMC), with China Road and Bridge Corporation as contractor. Sadain noted that beyond its role as vital infrastructure for Davao City, the bridge symbolizes resilient, future-ready development and strong bilateral cooperation between the Philippines and China.

Construction began in November 2023. The four-lane, six-span extradosed bridge measures 480 meters, with 860 meters of approach roads, built to international engineering standards.

On August 22, 2025, Sadain inspected the project with UPMO-BMC Project Director Rodrigo I. Delos Reyes, Roads Management Cluster I Project Director Benjamin A. Bautista, and other DPWH officials.
