Malacañang affirms continuity of governance after poll postponement

MANILA (October 31) — Malacañang on Thursday affirmed that the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) remains the legitimate governing body of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) following the postponement of the region’s first parliamentary elections.

The Office of the President (OP) said the BTA will continue to exercise its full powers and authority during the extended transition period until new officials are elected or appointed.

“No formal reappointment is necessary, as current members continue to hold office by operation of law until replaced or succeeded,” the Palace said, adding that the continuity of the BTA ensures “legal stability and orderly transition” in the region.

The OP also cited consistency with the Bangsamoro Organic Law, Republic Act 12123, and the Supreme Court’s ruling that postponed the first Bangsamoro elections to no later than March 31, 2026 after striking down previous redistricting laws.

“The Office of the President reiterates its commitment to peace, self-governance, and inclusive development in the region,” it said.
