BUTUAN CITY (November 11) — Heavy rains from Tropical Storm “Uwan” (Fung-Wong) left over 550 families, or more than 2,300 residents, displaced across 17 barangays in Butuan City last Saturday, November 8.

Floodwaters rose quickly in Pigdaulan, Lemon, Basag, and Pianing, prompting early evacuation. Village chief Dindo Hidalgo urged residents along creeks and riverbanks to move to higher ground, while authorities also warned of possible landslides and storm surges in upland and coastal areas.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) declared a red alert, ensuring faster coordination among local authorities and government agencies. Residents were advised to stay in touch with barangay officials for evacuation guidance.

Flooded roads caused heavy traffic. Ampayon Road near the Rotunda and public market was impassable to small vehicles, while Mahay–Tagabaca road and parts of the National Highway in Barangay Sto. Niño were accessible only to larger vehicles. Drivers were advised to use alternative routes and proceed with caution.

Caraga State University (CSU) opened its gymnasium as an evacuation center for affected boarding students and provided transport for stranded residents.

By Sunday, floodwaters had begun to recede, though local authorities continued monitoring vulnerable areas and assisting residents to ensure safety. The storm served as a reminder of the need for preparedness in flood-prone communities.
