CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY(December 5) — Government offices in Northern Mindanao are taking steps to make workplaces more inclusive, respectful, and safe by promoting the use of gender-fair language.
Lawyer Pauline Mae Araneta-Drilon led a workshop organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10), highlighting that choosing words carefully is more than a formality—it’s about creating a culture where respect is the standard, not optional.
“It is about transforming the way we think, act, and relate to one another,” Drilon said. “Gender-fair language helps foster an environment where everyone, regardless of gender orientation, feels valued and safe.”
The initiative is part of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children, and DENR-10 encouraged both government employees and communities to adopt inclusive communication practices in daily interactions.
Other agencies and LGUs in Northern Mindanao also held related activities. In Camiguin, the provincial government organized a Psychological First Aid training, while Iligan City held a Gender and Development workshop—all reinforcing a broader push toward inclusive, respectful workplaces and community spaces.
For officials and employees across the region, the workshops are more than a policy reminder—they are practical tools to uplift dignity, reduce discrimination, and create workplaces where everyone can thrive.
