CCTV considered as requirement for business permit in CDO

DAVAO CITY – Businesses in Cagayan de Oro City might soon be compelled to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) as Mayor Rolando Uy plans to revise a City Ordinance which will compel business establishment to put up one before a business permit is issued and violating it carris penalty.

In a statement released on Thursday, Uy said this was one of the discussions brought up with Councilor Romeo Calizo, a retired military general and chair of the committee on public safety Thursday.

“If possible, we revise the ordinance to include a provision of cancellation or non-renewal of business permits to establishments that fail to install CCTV security cameras,” he said.

The city has an existing city ordinance that requires business establishments to install CCTVs, but it lacks provisions mandating the cancellation or non-renewal of permits should business owners fail to comply.

The discussion on CCTVs resurfaced following Wednesday’s daytime robbery of a pawnshop here where armed assailants carted PHP9 million worth of jewelry items.

Uy directed Col. Salvador Radam, city police director, to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

“This means, we have to add more efforts to maintain the city’s peace and order,” Uy said.
