DAVAO CITY — The personnel of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized smuggled cigarettes worth Php28,993,800.00 during a coordinated operation in Barangay Patalon, Zamboanga City.

The operation, codenamed Oplan Mega Shopper, was conducted from late evening on November 27, 2024, to the afternoon of November 28, 2024.

The CIDG Zamboanga City Field Unit (ZCFU) led the operation in close coordination with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and other law enforcement agencies. Acting under BIR Mission Order No. 00060479, the team successfully confiscated 506 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes.

The contraband lacked the necessary Internal Revenue stamps, indicating a deliberate evasion of tax obligations.

The smuggled cigarettes are currently in the custody of the BIR for inventory and proper documentation. Investigators from the BIR Regional Investigation Division (RID) are conducting a thorough investigation to identify the individuals behind the illicit trade.

Police BGen Nicolas Torre III said they are preparing to file charges for violations of Republic Act 8424 (National Internal Revenue Code of 1997), which governs taxation and revenue compliance.

Torre, representing the CIDG leadership, emphasized the group’s dedication to combating illegal activities. “The CIDG assures the public of its unwavering commitment to enforcing anti-criminality campaigns and putting a stop to illegal and criminal activities. Dahil ang gusto ng pulis, ligtas ka,” he stated.
