DAVAO CITY — A land dispute between rival Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) groups has resulted in the loss of 19 lives, injuries to five individuals and evacuation in Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur.

The conflict, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, involved a violent confrontation between the factions led by MILF Commander Engr. Alonto Sultan and Abdul Latip.

The clash, centered around contested rice fields in Barangay Kilangan, escalated into a fierce gun battle, causing civilians to flee for their safety.

Vice Mayor Abdilla Mamasabulod revealed that the root of the conflict lay in the dispute over approximately 300 hectares of land.

Both sides, represented by Sultan and Latip, claimed ownership of the valuable agricultural land, citing legal documents and ancestral inheritance as proof.

Efforts to quell the violence were made by the military, police forces, and the MILF ceasefire committee.

Lt. Col. Roden Orbon, a regional Army spokesperson, confirmed the intervention of soldiers from the 90th Infantry Battalion, who swiftly responded to the scene with an armored carrier to ensure the safety of the fleeing civilians.

As the community grapples with the tragic loss of life and the aftermath of the violent clashes, authorities are working towards restoring peace in the area and preventing further escalation of tensions.
