DA-XI distributes corn seeds to farmers in Davao Oriental

DAVAO CITY –— The Department of Agriculture through the Corn Program has distributed bags of corn seeds in preparation for the wet planting season at Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.

“The distribution of corn seeds to farmers under the corn seeds assistance program is in support of achieving food security and sufficiency in the country. Despite the pandemic, we need to provide the timely distribution of interventions in Davao region to ensure adequate food supply,” said DA-XI corn technical staff Ronalyn Gepullano.

Municipal Agriculturist Narciso Roscom said to qualify for the corn seeds assistance program, it shall be done through an active corn cluster organization. The corn cluster organization shall identify the farmer-beneficiaries of corn seeds and determine their preferred seed-type.

The Grupong Mag-uuma sa Barangay Surop with 39 members were the recipients of 23 bags of GM corn seeds, 10 bags of OPV white corn seeds, and a mechanical sheller.

“We thank DA for their continuous support and interventions to our association. We would also like to extend help to other farmers who are interested in corn farming,” said Nestor Mamada, Chairman of Grupong Mag-uuma sa Barangay Surop.

Also present during the distribution, representing the office of the Provincial Governor Nelson Dayanghirang, technical adviser Daud Linzag and Provincial cooperative officer Rotchie Ravelo.

“We are also procuring additional seeds and fertilizers to support corn farmers affected by the pandemic,” Gepullano said.
