Dabawenyos hold charity  events to benefit young students in PH

October 19, 2017 by Moses Billacura Leave a Comment

EDMONTON, CANADA — The Dabawenyo Cultural Assistance Society (DCAS) has been doing charitable work for the last seven years without much fanfare by holding social events here and the funds have benefitted kids who are in school in the Philippines.

“We are really grateful for the help of not only Dabawenyos here in Alberta Province but all Filipinos who are not from the Davao Region who came to support our event,” said society president Robert Torrejon.

It has been a challenge for him and the other officers to seek support from various corporate sponsors citing that Alberta has experienced some downturns with the price of oil going down and just recently slowly picking up.  “Nevertheless, they responded positively and supported us,” he added.

The recent charity event has raised funds for a public washroom and water system which will be built at a school in Davao del Sur.   DCAS officials have also tapped the assistance of friends in the Philippines to help them identify educational institutions located in the urban areas that need the most help.

In the previous projects, DCAS has raised funds to buy school supplies. “May mga students talaga na wala o kaya kulang ang kanila school supplies dahil mga tatay at nanay nila ay di naman kayang bilhin lahat,” said past DCAS president Rommel Duco.

Dr.Dexter Cequina of the Department of Education (DepEd) said that the students of Mayaon Elementary School in Montevista, Compostela Valley Province have received bags and school supplies through funding of DCAS on June 2013.

The Octobrefest Jam and Dance last October 14 was jampacked at the OTS Hall and local bands Jess Valdez Switch Band and Jam for a Cause lowered their usual performance fees to also help.

Wheaton Honda, Park Pinoy/Park Mazda, Dorothy Cornel/Ryan Paluca, Quality Sleep Care/Alberta Medical/Medicus Clinic, Dental Oasis & Swish Dental, WFG World Financial Group (4803 87 Street), Max’s Restaurant, Rainbow Vacuum and Filipino Drives came in as major sponsors.

Backing the event too were minor sponsors Wefix Autoglass, Emilio’s Inasal, Mama Nita’s, Kuya Allan’s Lechon, Clearcut Insurance – Christina Rufino, Tambayan ni Kabayan, Prestige Vision, Kangen – Jeff Torregosa and Right Choice Camps & Catering Ltd and donors Turo-Turo, Remelie’s, Food D’licious, SGF Travel and Tours, Jen Rubang, Panciteria, Greatway, Sunfreight Cargo, Star Express, Renerey Ltd. and Julie’s Bakeshop.-Moses Billacura/Newsline Philippines
