Davao City government suspends classes in all levels

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Due to severe weather bulletin last  Monday night, the City Government of Davao has ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in both public and private schools in Davao City Tuesday, February 13, 2018, due  to Tropical Storm Basyang.

In declaring the class suspension, the City Government through the City Information Office cited  weather bulletin for Tropical Storm Basyang issued at 8 pm, 12 February 2018, which states that “Scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail in the next 24 hours over Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao — which can affect Davao City.”

At 10:00 PM, February 12,  the center of Tropical Storm “BASYANG” was estimated based on all available data at 300 km East Southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. The PAGASA stated “Basyang”  has maintained  its speed and direction as it continues to move towards Northeastern Mindanao.

Scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail in the next 24 hours over Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula and the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, and Lanao del Sur. Meanwhile, scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rains is expected over Bicol Region, the rest of Mindanao and the province of Romblon.

Residents of these areas must continue monitoring for updates, take precautionary measures against possible flooding and landslides, and coordinate with their respective local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

The city government emphasized “There will be no suspension of government work at the LGU level. Cancellation of work in the private sector is at the discretion of the employers.”

The city government also urged residents in flood and landslide-prone areas  to be always on the alert and prepare for preemptive evacuation if necessary. Please use your best judgment if you feel that there is a need to conduct your voluntary evacuation.
