DAVAO CITY  (March 11) — In upland villages and barangay halls across Davao de Oro, women and girls are taking center stage this March as community-based programs highlight their role in local development and family resilience.

As part of the nationwide observance of National Women’s Month, the provincial government has rolled out activities aimed not only at celebrating women but also strengthening grassroots initiatives that support women’s livelihoods, health, and leadership.

According to Gender and Development (GAD) Center head Kris Caballero, the province continues to promote programs that recognize the everyday contributions of women in communities.

“We are always taking the stand in respecting the rights and dignity of women,” Caballero said in a statement.

Beyond symbolic celebrations, the local government has introduced practical initiatives targeting women’s groups at the community level. Among these are the distribution of agricultural seedlings to women-led associations to support household livelihoods, as well as free healthcare services for women and girls in rural areas.

Local officials say these initiatives are designed to empower women economically while strengthening their role in community development.

Throughout the month, government employees are also participating in “Purple Wednesdays,” a campaign that encourages awareness of gender equality and solidarity with women’s rights.

Women’s organizations across the province also showcased their creativity and community spirit through a Zumba novelty dance competition during the Bulawan Festival, one of the highlights of the province’s annual celebration.

The activities form part of the nationwide campaign led by the Philippine Commission on Women to highlight women’s role in nation-building.

However, advocates note that grassroots empowerment remains essential, particularly for women and girls in rural and mining communities where economic opportunities can be limited.

Community-based initiatives—such as livelihood support, health services, and leadership training—are seen as key steps toward ensuring that women and girls not only participate in development efforts but also help shape them.

For many communities in Davao de Oro, Women’s Month is not only a celebration but a reminder that empowering women at the grassroots level is central to building stronger and more resilient communities.
