MATI CITY — The beautiful province of Davao Oriental, blessed with world-class surfing sites with spectacular waves and stunning untouched coastlines is now being targeted as another surfing destination in the Philippines.

Presidential son William Vincent Marcos on Tuesday, March 21, made a courtesy call on Governor Corazon Malanyaon at the Provincial Tourism Complex, together with officials from the United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA), the country’s national sports authority for surfing.

The youngest Marcos and the group of surfers spent the weekend touring some of the province’s east coast surfing locations before heading to the City of Mati on Monday. A surfer and explorer, Marcos expressed his surprise at the province’s alluring beauty.

Davao Oriental has a lot of promise, according to UPSA President Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, who also mentioned that the province is a dream vacation spot for many surfers because of its crystal-clear waters, spotless white-sand beaches, and ideal waves.

Davao Oriental boasts the longest coastline in the region, most of which faces the Pacific Ocean, with waves that provide good riding for surfers.

Canlas hinted at UPSA’s desire to introduce surfing activities to the province. Governor Malanyaon welcomed this and expressed her desire to start a major surfing competition this year.

The tourism industry in the province has received much attention from Malanyaon, who sees it as a key to boosting the local economy because it may enhance employment prospects locally and bring in money for small businesses.

Members of the Mati Watersports Association and the Surfers Club, as well as technical consultant Cynthia Rodriguez, Provincial Administrator Maria Gracia Tiago and Provincial Treasurer Engr. Ma. Elena Rodriguez were also present during the courtesy call.
