DAVAO CITY – The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) reported zero firecracker or pyrotechnics-related injuries during the New Year celebrations, marking the city’s peaceful start to 2025.

“There has been no firecracker or pyrotechnic device-related incident recorded at the hospital,” said Dr. Ricardo Audan, chief of SPMC told Newsline Philippines.

While the city avoided firework-related injuries, Dr. Audan noted that four individuals were admitted due to alcohol-related incidents, and others sustained injuries from physical altercations.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Director Colonel Hansel Marantan commended the city’s residents for adhering to local laws. “The record from SPMC and police reports shows that Davaoeños are law-abiding citizens. Only minor injuries related to alcohol were reported,” Marantan said.

The peaceful celebration aligns with Davao City Ordinance 060 Series of 2002, which strictly prohibits the manufacture, sale, possession, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. The ordinance has been instrumental in preventing firecracker-related injuries and maintaining public safety during the holidays.

In the weeks leading up to the yuletide season, Davao City Police launched a sustained campaign to remind residents of the ordinance. Marantan also directed officers to remain vigilant and ensure that Christmas and New Year festivities were celebrated peacefully.

The city’s success in achieving a bloodless New Year again highlights its firecracker ban’s effectiveness and its residents’ collective commitment to prioritize safety and peace during the holidays, Marantan added.
