Dead whale discovered floating in Surigao Sur

BUTUAN CITY – Residents of a fishing village in Hinatuan town, Surigao del Sur, found a floating dead whale Saturday morning.

Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office (SDSPPO) director Col. James Goforth said personnel of Hinatuan Municipal Police Office (HMPO) was alerted of the floating carcass discovered by fishermen at around 6:10 a.m. in Sitio Gacubay, Barangay Baculin.

HMPO report said the whale is estimated to be 17 meters long. No other details were provided by the local police as they wait for the proper authorities to arrive. “The recovered dead whale is now under the custody of the Municipal Fisheries Office of Hinatuan town for proper disposition,” Goforth said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Caraga (DENR-13) regional executive director Felix Alicer said he has already instructed the provincial office in Surigao del Sur to look into the matter. (PNA)
