DAVAO CITY (November 6) — Democrats have won control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress in a sweeping victory in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Democrats secured at least 54 of the 100 Senate seats, compared with 44 for Republicans, giving them control of the chamber. Two Senate races, in Alaska and Mississippi, remained undecided and could further increase the Democratic majority.

In the House of Representatives, Democrats also won a clear majority, gaining at least 30 seats and flipping districts in several traditionally Republican states. The victories ended unified Republican control of Washington and are expected to significantly reshape the final two years of Trump’s presidency.

The results have been described as a major Democratic wave, with voters expressing frustration over the cost of living, the economy, the Iran war, and concerns about the Trump administration’s direction. Democrats made particularly significant gains among young, Latino and moderate voters.

The new Democratic majority is expected to increase congressional scrutiny of the Trump administration, pursue investigations and challenge parts of the president’s legislative agenda. However, Trump will retain the presidential veto, meaning the next two years could bring a period of intense political confrontation between the White House and Congress.

The election also gives Democrats renewed momentum heading into the 2028 presidential race, although the midterm results alone do not determine who will become the next U.S. president.

For now, the message from American voters is unmistakable: Washington’s balance of power has shifted dramatically, with Democrats preparing to take control of Congress in January 2027.
