MANILA (August 12) – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday condemned China for its latest “unlawful interference” with Philippine operations in Bajo de Masinloc, which led to a collision between two Chinese vessels on Monday.
DFA Spokesperson Angelica Escalano said the dangerous maneuvers by People’s Liberation Army Navy ship 164 and China Coast Guard ship 3104 endangered Philippine personnel and vessels during a humanitarian mission for Filipino fisherfolk.
She stressed that the shoal is an integral part of Philippine territory and urged China to “draw lessons” from the incident. The DFA reiterated calls for adherence to international maritime safety rules, including COLREGS and SOLAS, and vowed to pursue diplomacy and dialogue while firmly asserting the country’s sovereignty under international law.
The collision occurred as the CCG vessel chased BRP Suluan at high speed. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) offered medical aid and towed the damaged ship from the area, earning praise from the DFA for its professionalism and seamanship.
