TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Sec. Mark Villar on Tuesday led the inauguration of the newly-constructed flood protection dike in this town.

Villar commended the DPWH Unified Project Management Office for the completion of the PHP778-million project, aimed at mitigating flood damage in high-risk areas of the town.

Situated in a low-lying area, Tagoloan is identified as high-risk zone for flashfloods by the local environment office.

Villar said the protection dike will also provide opportunities for development in the area while mitigating the effects of climate change.

DPWH-10 spokesperson Vinah Mahinay said the Tagoloan River Basin Flood Control Project is one of the flood risk management projects implemented by the agency to mitigate flood damage in three vulnerable areas in the country.

Mahinay said the project is funded through a loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency and involves the construction of 692-meter upstream, 1.9-kilometer downstream revetment structures, as well as excavation work and drainage improvement.

Villar thanked the government of Japan “for their continued support in the Duterte administration’s infrastructure program that aims to provide quality and safe infrastructure facilities to propel national economic growth.” (PNA)
