Abas will replace former Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista who was impeached by the House of Representatives following domestic controversies and financial issues with estranged wife Patricia.

Abas is a lawyer and law professor who earned his Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (Batch 1998-99) from Notre Dame University in Cotabato City and pursued baccalaureate degree in Law at Ateneo De Davao University (Batch 2003-2004) and passed the Philippine Bar Exams a year after his graduation.
In his profile at the commission, Abas wrote that in the imminent future, he aims to improve and deliver “an even better and more effective and efficient service to the public as he continues to serve as one of the Commissioners of the Comelec.”
Abas appointment is subject to confirmation by the Commission on Appointments (CA).
Abas has been appointed to the Comelec by former President Benigno S. Aquino III in 2015, and was confirmed by the CA a year later.
He is a nephew of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leader Mohagher Iqbal.
Prior to his service at the Comelec, Abas served as assistant acting regional director of the Civil Service Commission in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.-Editha Z. Caduaya/Newsline.ph
