DAVAO CITY, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte signed new law creating three barangays here and another five in Tagum City.
The Republic Act 10953 creates three new barangays namely: Barrio Pampanga, Alfonso Angliongso Sr. and Vicente Hizon Sr.
Ralph Abella, Barangay Captain of Vicente Hizon Sr. was happy upon learning that finally, his village is officially created as it means additional Internal revenue Allotment (IRA) that would redound to be welfare and development of his constituents.
“Was it signed already? wow! We are very happy because we can now have additional IRA from the national government which will greatly benefit our village and our people,” Abella told Newsline.ph.
Barangay Hizon was created in 2003 but pending the passage of the law officially creating the village, the city government of Davao provides the IRA which started from P1.8-million and has gradually increased to P2.3-million.
According to Abella, his village has over 12,000 population according to the latest census of the National Statistics Authority (NSA).
The voting population is about 6,000 of half of its population.
Meanwhile, Republic Act 10954 divides Barangay Magugpo in Tagum, Davao del Norte into five distinct and independent barangays.
The new barangays were named as Magugpo Poblacion, Magugpo-East, Magugpo-West, Magugpo-North and Magugpo-South.
Under the new laws creating barangays, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) was mandated to conduct and supervise the plebiscite not later that 120 days from the effectivity of the new laws.
As of September 2015, there were 42,036 barangays in the country.
The current elected officials in said barangays will continue their term of office until new officials are elected.-Editha Z. Caduaya/Newsline.ph
