Duterte to visit Myanmar

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte deaparts this afternoon to visit Burma (Myanmar) and talk with the country’s top officials including Nobel Peace Prize awardee and democratic icon Aung San Suu Kyi.

At 2pm today Duterte will leave the country via Davao City Internatioal Airport for Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
His first schedule is meeting the Filipino community at Horizon Lake View. There are about 2,000 Filipinos in Myanmar mostly temporary migrants.

He will pay courtesy call to Filipino companies operating in Mayanmar on Monday , thereafter he will proceed to Myanmar Presidential Palace for the bilateral talks with Burma President U Htin Kyaw

A separate meeting with Suu Kyi, the country’s first state counselor and female foreign minister in Myanmar’s capital Nay Pyi Taw

He is scheduled to meet Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the commander in chief of the Myanmar armed forces.

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Charles Jose, said Mr. Duterte and Suu Kyi were expected to discuss “issues of mutual concern on political cooperation, on economic cooperation and capacity building.”

Philippine officials included in the trip are Foreign Affairs Acting Secretary Enrique Manalo, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Director Gen. Isidro Lapeña, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
